In short

As an incubator, Vargas has developed a greenfield model for building disruptive businesses from the ground up, based on vertical integration and close customer collaboration. During its first decade, Vargas incubated a number of companies across sectors such as energy storage, steelmaking, hydrogen, home energy-tech and textile recycling. In the coming decade, the focus will be on realising the full potential of these ventures, where Vargas acts as active long-term owner.

Rationale

The climate crisis, combined with global shifts in economic and geopolitical power, has intensified the need for new solutions and value chains to safeguard the competitiveness of European industry. This was the rationale behind Vargas.

To tackle hard-to-abate industries and enable large-scale impact, Vargas’ approach has always been to transform traditional industry by building new ventures and value chains from the ground up – leveraging new technologies and vertical integration.

Our JOURNEY

Vargas’ journey began with energy storage provider Polarium, founded in response to growing demand for smart, sustainable and cost-effective backup power solutions in the telecom sector. Recognising both the impact and financial potential of challenging hard-to-abate industries with new business models, validated technologies and customer partnerships, Vargas was founded as an incubator to apply this approach to sectors with substantial carbon footprints. This ultimately led to the co-founding of Northvolt, Stegra, Aira and Syre.

Vargas’ investments have been financed principally through Kallskär, the investment vehicle of Harald Mix. Both founders have an evergreen investment approach and aim to remain as long-term investors in the companies that Vargas has co‑founded.
