CURRENT STATUS
Like many companies in the battery sector, Northvolt experienced a series of compounding challenges that eroded its financial position, including rising capital costs, geopolitical instability, subsequent supply chain disruptions, and shifts in market demand. At the same time, the company faced significant internal challenges in its ramp-up of production.
Despite pursuing all available options to negotiate and implement a financial restructuring – including a Chapter 11 process in the United States – and securing liquidity support from lenders and key counterparties, Northvolt was unable to secure the necessary financing to continue in its current form. The Board determined that bankruptcy was the only available solution at the time. Notably, in the period leading up to and following the bankruptcy, production reached its highest levels to date, with consistent and high quality, meeting previously set production and yield targets.
Following Northvolt’s bankruptcy announcement on 12 March 2025, Lyten acquired the company’s remaining assets and intellectual property in Sweden and Germany. The transaction, completed in February 2026, allows the facilities, capabilities and industrial know-how built around Northvolt to continue contributing to Europe’s energy independence and the transition toward clean industry.
